What Each Type of Exercise Actually Does

Cardiovascular training — also called aerobic exercise — refers to sustained activity that elevates your heart rate over time. Think brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming, or rowing. Where They Overlap — and Where They Don't
Some benefits of cardio and strength training do overlap. But the overlap has real limits. Cardio does not meaningfully build muscle mass or prevent the age-related bone loss known as osteoporosis. Strength training, while it can elevate heart rate — especially in circuit formats — does not produce the same sustained aerobic adaptations as dedicated cardio work.

This is why most major health organizations, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, recommend both: at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week alongside muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days. Neither type fully substitutes for the other.
